TRAFFIC ADVISORY- 4th of July Fireworks



TRAFFIC ADVISORY
On Saturday, July 4th, the Town of Abingdon will hold the annual fireworks display at the Coomes Center. The fireworks will begin at 9:45pm and Stanley Street will CLOSE to vehicle traffic at 6:00pm. There will be NO PARKING on Stanley Street! Please use caution and slow your speed in the Stanley Street, Thompson Drive, Walden Road and East Main Street area due to high traffic volume and pedestrians.

Bike Virginia Tour- June 26th

Reminder about Bike Virginia Tour in Washington County and Abingdon TODAY-
TRAFFIC ADVISORY
This weekend, June 26th-29th, the Bike Virginia Tour will be in Abingdon. Riders will be stationed at the 4-H Center for the duration of their stay so be aware of heavy biking activity along Hillman Highway. They will be riding through Washington County and the Town of Abingdon on (TODAY) Friday, June 26th. This ride consists of main roads and back roads with a rest stop at the Abingdon Farmers Market. There will be no road closures but there will be heavy bike traffic in the area so please be cautious, share the road, and watch your speed.

Wanted for First Degree Murder- UPDATE

For Immediate Release

 On Thursday, June 25, 2015, at approximately 11:00 AM, Abingdon Police were dispatched to the parking lot of the Virginia Department of Probation and Parole District 17 office in reference to an unknown medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers observed the victim, Edsel C. Copeland, 67, of 16140 Elementary Drive, Abingdon, VA., laying in the parking lot with a wound to his chest. He was being prepped for transport to the hospital by members of the Washington County Life Saving Crew. Witnesses stated that Mr. Copeland had been assaulted by his son, Joshua Carroll Copeland, 31, of 16140 Elementary Drive, Abingdon, VA., while on the way to an appointment at the probation office. After assaulting his father, Joshua Copeland fled the scene in a 2006 Silver Dodge Charger barring Virginia registration- JWN-5305.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Based upon information obtained from witnesses, investigators secured a felony warrant for violation of 18.2-32 (first degree murder) of the code of Virginia. Police are still searching for the suspect. If anyone has information concerning the location of Joshua Carroll Copeland, please contact your local police department.

Wanted for First Degree Murder

The Abingdon Police Department is searching for Joshua Carroll Copeland, 31, of 16140 Elementary Drive, Abingdon, VA. He is wanted for first degree murder in connection with a death that occurred this morning in the 200 block of West Main Street, Abingdon. Copeland was last seen driving a 2006 Silver Dodge Charger with the license plate number- JWN-5305. If you have any information concerning his location, please contact your local police department.

Peeping Tom Charged

On Sunday, June 21, 2015, at approximately 11:00PM, Abingdon Police were dispatched to the 800 block of Gilliam Street in reference to a peeping tom. The complainants stated that a white male wearing a white t-shirt was peering in the windows of their home.  The complainants stated that when the suspect was spotted, he ran from the yard.


Officers were able to identify the suspect as Robert G. Neal, 40, of 848 Gilliam Street, Abingdon, Virginia. Neal was charged with Peeping or spying into dwelling or enclosure, in violation of § 18.2-130 of the Code of Virginia. Neal was transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without incident where he is being held on a $5000.00 secured bond.
