Valley-Cummings Street Closure

Contractors will be removing a tree on Cummings Street near the intersection of Cummings and Valley Streets on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.  The work will begin at approximately 8:45 AM and will conclude by 3:30 PM.  To accommodate the removal of the tree, the contractor has been granted permission to close the right turn lane on Valley Street, west of the Cummings Street intersection.  In addition, the contractor will close the outside southbound lane of Cummings Street, north of the intersection of Plumb Alley (see graphic).  Please be mindful of this lane restriction and watch for contractors removing the tree.  Traffic may be held periodically to allow for different portions of the tree to be removed from the power lines.

We encourage you to avoid Valley Street, eastbound, between Russell Road and Cummings Street.  If possible, please use Main Street as an alternate route.

On Thursday, August 22, 2019, the Abingdon High School Falcon Football team will play the Patrick Henry High School Football team at Latture Field (425 West Main Street, Abingdon) at 7:00PM.

The following establishments have graciously allowed general parking in their lots:

Additional parking is available at the William King Parking Lots, the Little League Fields on Russell Road, Depot Square, Remsburg Drive, and the Municipal Parking Lot on Main Street across from the Farmer’s Market.

Handicap parking is permitted at Chick-N-Little restaurant. You will need to have your handicap placard displayed to park in this area.

The attached map shows the designated parking areas, entrances to the game, seating areas, restroom facilities, and more information.

Please be courteous and don’t leave trash in parking lots.

Due to the crowd expected for this game, and the small area around the field, we ask that you be alert to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the downtown Abingdon area. Slow your speed, be alert for pedestrians, and choose an alternate route Thursday evening, if you are not planning to attend the game.

Exit 19 Ramp Project

***Interstate 81 bridge work at exit 19: Bridge work on Interstate 81 at exit 19 in Abingdon (Washington County) continues, and the schedule for the southbound work is the weekend of August 9. The southbound Interstate 81 on ramp accessible from the Damascus side of the interstate will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, August 9 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 13. Additionally, there will be a lane closure on southbound I-81 from 7 p.m. Friday, August 9 until 6 a.m. Monday, August 12. The closures are necessary to ensure safety while hydrodemolition and a bridge overlay takes place in the right lane and the acceleration lane on I-91 at exit 19. Use caution in this area and pay close attention to signs and message boards. (Completion: early March 2020)

TRAFFIC ALERT: RADFORD SAFETY REST AREAS ON INTERSTATE 81 TO CLOSE FOR PAVING BEGINNING NEXT WEEK

SALEM – The.Beginning next week, the Interstate 81 safety rest areas in Radford, northbound and southbound, are scheduled to be closed, weather permitting. The closure will be in place while the parking areas are being paved. On Monday, August 12 at 8 a.m., the I-81 southbound Radford Safety Rest Area at mile marker 108 will close. The site will re-open on Monday, August 19, at 8 a.m. On Monday, August 19 at 8 a.m., the I-81 northbound Radford Safety Rest Area at mile marker 108 will close. The site will reopen on Monday, August 26 at 8 a.m.   Drivers are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly. Tomorrow, August 9, 2019, the new right turn lane into the Meadows Complex will be CLOSED. Starting at 8:00 AM, the lane will be closed to help with the installation of the new multi-tenant Food City/Meadows sign. Please plan accordingly, and choose a different route.

PUBLIC INVITED TO ATTEND INTERSTATE 81 ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING August meeting to prioritize implementation schedule for the I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) are inviting members of the public to attend the first meeting of the Interstate 81 (I-81) Advisory Committee on Tuesday, August 13, in Lexington. As directed in Senate Bill 1716 (now 2019 Acts of Assembly Chapter 846), the I-81 Advisory Committee is charged with providing advice and making recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) regarding the development of the I-81 Corridor Improvement program and updates to the I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan. The plan was approved by the CTB in December 2018, following a comprehensive study of the corridor. The I-81 Advisory Committee must meet four times a year at rotating planning district locations along the corridor and report to the Governor and General Assembly each December. Senate Bill 1716, introduced by Senators Mark Obenshain and Bill Carrico, and House Bill 2718, introduced by Delegates Steve Landes and Terry Austin, establish the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program, Fund and Committee. The legislation also provides revenues for the Fund through the creation of a new registration fee and diesel, regional and road taxes. Governor Ralph Northam announced amendments in March, providing dedicated annual funding to the corridor, estimated initially as $103 million in fiscal year 2020 and growing to an estimated $163 million in fiscal year 2025. These funds will support a $2 billion improvement program. The advisory committee meeting will be held Tuesday, August 13, at 2 p.m. at the Hampton Inn, located at 401 E Nelson Street, Lexington, VA 24450. The committee has 15 voting members: seven Virginia lawmakers, three CTB members representing the Bristol, Salem and Staunton districts and the five chairs of the planning district commissions. VDOT’s commissioner and DRPT’s director will serve on the committee ex officio in nonvoting capacities. Traffic Advisory: Exit 19

Traffic Advisory:

The Abingdon Police Department was notified this morning that the Exit 19 lane and on-ramp will be closed again today. According to VDOT, the contractor experienced an equipment issue which delayed completion of the work last night. All traffic attempting to access I-81 southbound from the Damascus side of highway will need to enter at exit 22 to avoid congestion.

Please do not call the police department to voice concerns about this issue. This project is not in the Town Limits of Abingdon and is a project of the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Town of Abingdon is only providing this information as a service to our citizens, we have no control over the project, the traffic, or the timeline for completion. Thank you for understanding!
