Abingdon Police Department- Cummings Street Bridge Incident 10-8-2020

For Immediate Release

 On Thursday, October 8, 2020, at approximately 9:39 AM, Abingdon Police officers were dispatched to the Cummings Street Bridge (near Remsburg Drive and Bradley Street) in reference to a male sitting on the edge of the bridge. The male subject appeared to be upset and wanted to speak to a counselor. After 90 minutes of negotiations with the Abingdon Police Department, Highlands Community Services, Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office and the Washington County, VA Life Saving Crew, the male subject agreed to leave the area for treatment.

“By collaborating with our agency partners, we were able to bring resources to the scene to effectively address a person in crisis, said Chief Jon Holbrook. The Abingdon Police Department is committed to inter-agency cooperation to best serve our community. On behalf of the Abingdon Police Department, I would like to sincerely thank all of the agencies involved.”

I-81 Exit 17 Northbound Off-Ramp - Partial Closure

 On Thursday, September 10, 2020, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, utility work will require a partial lane closure on the Interstate 81 Exit 17 Northbound Off-Ramp. Motorists can still use the exit, but the lane width will be restricted. Please use caution for the safety of yourself and the utility workers. Thank you!
