On Thursday, October 8, 2020, at approximately 9:39
AM, Abingdon Police officers were dispatched to the Cummings Street Bridge
(near Remsburg Drive and Bradley Street) in reference to a male sitting on the
edge of the bridge. The male subject appeared to be upset and wanted to speak
to a counselor. After 90 minutes of negotiations with the Abingdon Police
Department, Highlands Community Services, Washington County, VA Sheriff’s
Office and the Washington County, VA Life Saving Crew, the male subject agreed
to leave the area for treatment.
“By collaborating with our agency
partners, we were able to bring resources to the scene to effectively address a
person in crisis, said Chief Jon Holbrook. The Abingdon Police Department is
committed to inter-agency cooperation to best serve our community. On behalf of
the Abingdon Police Department, I would like to sincerely thank all of the
agencies involved.”
