On Saturday, February 1, 2020, at approximately 11:55
AM, Abingdon Police officers observed a gold Nissan sedan eastbound on West
Main Street, make an illegal left turn onto Cummings Street. The officer
activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the violator on West
Valley Street. The suspect vehicle made a right turn onto Reservoir
Street, and accelerated rapidly, ignoring the officer. The Nissan made a left
turn on High Street and continued traveling southwest as High Street turned
into Dale Street. Suddenly, the vehicle came to a stop on Dale Street, and the
driver exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. The other occupants remained
in the vehicle and were detained by officers.
A search of the suspect vehicle yielded several grams
of Marijuana, Methamphetamine, a fungus-like material, Suboxone packages,
Suboxone strips, various drug paraphernalia, and over a thousand dollars in
cash.
The driver, Jeffrey Allen Berry, 27, of 16244 Mountain
Spring Road, Abingdon, VA, fled the scene on foot but was apprehended near a
residence on Valley Street. Berry is charged with two counts of manufacturing,
selling, giving, distributing, or possessing with intent to manufacture, sell, give,
or distribute a controlled substance, in violation of § 18.2-248 of the Code of
Virginia; possession with intent to sell, give or distribute marijuana in
violation of § 18.2-248.1 of the Code of Virginia; Eluding Police, in violation
of § 46.2-817 of the Code of Virginia; Obstructing justice; resisting arrest;
fleeing from a law enforcement officer, in violation of § 18.2-460 of the Code
of Virginia. In addition, he was served with two capiases for violating
probation. He is being held without bond.
The front seat passenger, Brandi Nichole Barker, 32,
of 6023 Mendota Road, Mendota, VA, was transported to the Southwest Virginia
Regional Jail and charged with two counts of manufacturing, selling, giving, distributing,
or possessing with intent to manufacture, sell, give, or distribute a
controlled substance, in violation of § 18.2-248 of the Code of Virginia. She
is being held without bond.
The back seat passenger, Brock B. Kestner, 25, of 173
B Street, Abingdon, VA, was found in possession of a plastic baggie containing
a white crystal substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Kestner was charged with Manufacturing, selling, giving, distributing, or
possessing with intent to manufacture, sell, give, or distribute a controlled
substance, in violation of § 18.2-248 of the Code of Virginia; and he was
served with a capias for Probation Violation. Kestner is being held at the
Southwest Virginia Regional Jail with no bond.
The Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office assisted in
this incident.
