Abingdon Police Department

For Immediate Release

On Friday, January 25, 2019, at approximately 4:00pm, Abingdon Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Baugh Lane in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a train. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Jamie N. LaPoint (31 yoa), of the 800 block of Baugh Lane, conscious on the north side of the railroad tracks with an obvious injury to her right leg. Washington County, VA Life Saving Crew responded to treat the victim and the Abingdon Fire Department set up a landing zone for the Virginia State Police Med-flight helicopter. The victim was transported via Med-flight to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Abingdon Police encountered Ms. LaPoint and a male companion, earlier in the day walking on the railroad tracks in the same area. Officers removed them from the tracks at that time, and gave them a warning for trespassing. It is unknown why Ms. LaPoint was back on the railroad tracks. Abingdon Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Abingdon Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that it is against the law to trespass on railroad tracks in Virginia. State code 18.2-159 makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2500 fine.

Nothing further at this time.

Abingdon Police Department- Non-Credible School Threat 1-20-19

Abingdon Police Department

For Immediate Release

On Sunday, January 20, 2019, a middle school student posted on social media, “I’m shooting up the school don’t come.”  Officers of the Abingdon Police Department have interviewed the student and spoken to the mother about the post.  The student admitted to making the post.  While the student was playing Xbox with a friend, the friend dared the student to make the post in hopes of not having to go to school tomorrow.  The student made the post, obviously, without realizing the full consequences of these actions.  This agency, as well as the school administration, take any and all threats to student safety seriously.  At this time, the investigation has shown this is NOT a credible threat.  However, in an abundance of caution, our officers are further investigating the incident.
