Abingdon
Police Department
For Immediate
Release
On Friday, January 25, 2019, at approximately 4:00pm, Abingdon
Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Baugh Lane in reference to a pedestrian
being struck by a train. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Jamie N.
LaPoint (31 yoa), of the 800 block of Baugh Lane, conscious on the north side
of the railroad tracks with an obvious injury to her right leg. Washington County,
VA Life Saving Crew responded to treat the victim and the Abingdon Fire Department
set up a landing zone for the Virginia State Police Med-flight helicopter. The
victim was transported via Med-flight to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The Abingdon Police encountered Ms. LaPoint and a male
companion, earlier in the day walking on the railroad tracks in the same area.
Officers removed them from the tracks at that time, and gave them a warning for
trespassing. It is unknown why Ms. LaPoint was back on the railroad tracks. Abingdon
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the
incident.
The Abingdon Police Department would like to take this
opportunity to remind the public that it is against the law to trespass on
railroad tracks in Virginia. State code 18.2-159 makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor
punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2500 fine.
Nothing further at this time.
