Abingdon Police Department- Two Charged with Grand Larceny

On September 18, 2019, at approximately 8:11 AM, Abingdon Police responded to the 500 block of Norfolk Street in reference to a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the complainant, who advised a 2002 white Dodge Dakota was last seen at his residence on the evening of September 17, 2019. The vehicle was listed as stolen in the national database. 

At approximately 9:45 AM, Washington County, VA Dispatch was contacted by a family member of the victim reporting that the stolen vehicle was traveling west on East Main Street in Abingdon. Abingdon Police located the vehicle on East Main Street, confirmed that it was the stolen vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, two occupants were removed from the vehicle. They were identified as Bobby Wayne Bright, 19, and Cody Terea Coleman, 18, both of Abingdon, VA.
Officers questioned Bright and Coleman and both admitted to stealing the truck and partially spray painting it to conceal its true color.

Bright also admitted to vandalizing a vehicle parked in the 500 block of East Main Street, by throwing a brick through the windscreen and later attempting to steal a U-Haul truck from a local rental business. While attempting to steal the U-Haul, Bright damaged the truck when he ran it into another U-Haul truck parked on the lot and then struck a utility pole.

Both men were arrested and transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon. While at the jail, officers received a call from another officer regarding a larceny from a vehicle in the 200 block of Trigg Street. Upon questioning Bright about the incident, he admitted to breaking into the vehicle and stealing cash that was inside. Bright was still in possession of some of the money from this theft and turned it over to the officers.

Bobby Wayne Bright is charged with the following:
  • Entering a vehicle with intent to commit a crime, in violation of § 18.2-147 of the Code of Virginia;
  • Petit Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-96 of the Code of Virginia;
  • Two counts of Grand Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-95 of the Code of Virginia;
  • Conspire to Commit Grand Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-23 of the Code of Virginia;
  • Destruction of Property, in violation of § 18.2-137 of the Code of Virginia

Cody Terea Coleman was charged with the following:
  • Grand Larceny, in violation of § 18.2-95 of the Code of Virginia;
  • Destruction of Property, in violation of § 18.2-137 of the Code of Virginia

Bright and Coleman are both being held without bond.
