The Town of Abingdon will observe Halloween on
Thursday, October 31, 2019. The Town Ordinance pertaining to trick or treat
visits (50-3) limits trick or treating to children
12 years of age and under on Halloween night. In addition, all trick-or-treat
must be concluded by 10 p.m.
Help ensure that you have a safe Halloween by
following these tips:
·
A
responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood
rounds.
·
Every
child and their escorts should use a flashlight.
·
Only
go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
·
Pedestrian
injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind
trick-or-treaters to:
o Stay in a group
and communicate where they will be going.
o Use reflective
tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
o Carry a cell
phone for quick communication.
o Stay on well-lit
streets and always use the sidewalk.
§ If not sidewalk is
available, walk at the far edge of the roadway FACING traffic.
o Avoid walking
yards to go from house to house.
o Cross the street
as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never
cross between parked cars or out of driveways.
o Never assume the
right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters. Just because
one car stops, doesn't mean others will!
