Special Olympics- Motorcycle Raffle

The Abingdon Police Department is helping sell raffle tickets to win a 2016 Indian Motorcycle. The motorcycle is being raffled off by the Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Bristol, Virginia Police Department. Proceeds from the raffle go to Special Olympics Virginia. Tickets are $20.00 and only 3,000 tickets will be sold. If you are interested in purchasing some raffle tickets, we have them at the APD (425 West Main Street). For questions, call 276-696-2496.

Virginia Highlands Community College Active Shooter Exercise

Virginia Highlands Community College Active Shooter Exercise
On Friday, March 25th, 2016, Virginia Highlands Community College will be conducting an active shooter exercise on the college campus (100 VHCC Drive, Abingdon) between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and noon. During the exercise, multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency response agencies will be participating causing some congestion along French Moore Jr. Boulevard. The area of VHCC Drive and Opportunity Lane will be closed during the exercise, but French Moore Jr. Boulevard will remain open. If there are any issues, we advise you contact Washington County Central Dispatch at 276-676-6285.

Please remember that this is only an exercise, but you may hear loud sirens and blank gunshots. Do not be alarmed! These types of preventative trainings are conducted regularly by law enforcement to be better prepared should a tragedy occur in our area. We ask drivers to be alert, slow their speeds, and not impede traffic in the area of the VHCC campus during the exercise. Thank you for your cooperation!


Reminder: The Washington County Administration Building will be CLOSED on Friday, March 25th, in observance of a state/federal holiday.

SCAM ALERT



SCAM ALERT:


The Abingdon Police Department has been notified about a scammer calling people and telling them they are partnering with the Town of Abingdon to install FREE security systems. The phone number of the scammer is a local number- 276-608-1488. This is a VOIP call most likely originating from outside of the country.  Be advised that this is a SCAM and we NEVER partner with other organizations or businesses for services. Please notify your family, friends, and neighbors about this scam so that no one falls victim to these predators. If you experience one of these calls, please call the APD at 276-628-3111.

Single Vehicle Traffic Crash 3-13-16

On Sunday, March 13th, 2016, at approximately 10:38 a.m., Abingdon Police, the Abingdon Fire Department, and the Washington County Life Saving Crew were dispatched to the 100 block of Lowland Street in reference to a single vehicle traffic crash in the ElderSpirit Community.

Upon arrival, officers found a gray SUV against the trees on the east side of the ElderSpirit property with its airbag deployed. The driver was still seated in the driver's seat, but was unresponsive. Attempts to resuscitate the driver were unsuccessful.

Further investigation revealed that driver turned around in the parking lot, in preparation to park.  The vehicle accelerated suddenly, eastbound across the parking lot. The vehicle left the driveway striking a tree approximately fifteen (15) feet from the driveway.

The victim has been identified as Robert G. Wolfinger, 80, of the 100 block of Lowland Street.


Mr. Wolfinger was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital at the request of the medical examiner.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION FOR 2016 SHAMROCK 4MILER

 Traffic Information FOr 2016 Shamrock 4miler

The Shamrock 4 Miler will be held Friday, March 11, 2016 in downtown Abingdon. This is a large event that originates, and ends, at the Abingdon Farmers Market on Remsburg Drive. The four mile loop course, and one mile walking loop, guide participants through downtown Abingdon primarily on Valley and Main Streets.

This is the first year that the race has been held before daylight saving time, making this year’s Shamrock event a night race. Motorists are advised to use caution when passing through downtown Abingdon on Friday night.  Be alert for police directing traffic and for participants on the roadways.

Due to race preparations, Remsburg Drive will be closed on Friday at 3 p.m. to allow for set up of the timer station and registration areas. Remsburg will remain closed until 11 p.m. Friday night.

Traffic will be slowed, delayed, and diverted to allow participants to safely complete the course.
