Halloween Tweet Along

On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, the Abingdon Police Department will participate in a statewide Halloween Tweet Along. Law enforcement agencies from all over Virginia will be tweeting during various hours on Halloween night. The hashtag to follow the Halloween Tweet Along is #TweetsOnPatrol and it will allow followers to interact with the APD as well as other police departments. This tweet along allows the public an inside look to what law enforcement will be doing on Halloween night, from patrols of heavy pedestrians areas to building and property checks.

Follow the Abingdon Police Department on Twitter- @AbingdonVAPD for the Halloween Tweet Along. The tweet along will be conducted during the hours of 5:00 PM and 12:00 AM. For more information or questions, call the APD at 276-628-3111.

Abingdon Police Department- Traffic Accident With Charges on 10-4-18

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, at approximately 9:53 AM, Abingdon Police Department officers were dispatched to the 200 block of East Main Street in reference to a motor vehicle crash. When officers arrived, they observed a box truck that hit a power pole, knocking the power lines down on top of a Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office police car. The two occupants of the box truck were questioned regarding the incident, and it was found that the driver, Trevis Lightfoot, had an outstanding warrant out of Bristol, VA for Assault and Battery, in violation of § 18.2-57 of the Code of Virginia.
Lightfoot, 25, of Bristol, VA was charged with the following as a result of the crash:

·         Fail to Maintain Control, in violation of § 46.2-853 of the Code of Virginia;
·         Drive on suspended license 3rd offense, in violation of § 46.2-301 of the Code of Virginia; and
·         Expired state inspection, in violation of § 46.2-1158 of the Code of Virginia

Lightfoot was released on summons for the above charges.

The passenger, Franklin Hudson, 30, of Bristol, VA was charged with Possession of Schedule I or II, in violation of § 18.2-250 of the Code of Virginia. As a result of a preliminary field test, the substance was consistent with methamphetamine.  Hudson is being held on a $2000 secured bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.

This incident closed East Main Street from Tanner Street to Hutton Street for several hours. Thanks to Appalachian Electric Power for their quick response in repairing the power pole and lines. We can now report that East Main Street is back OPEN.
