APD Press Release - 10-16-17

Abingdon Police Department


For Immediate Release

On Monday afternoon, October 16, 2017, Officer Y. D. Wilmoth was patrolling Cummings Street, when she observed a couple fighting inside a vehicle at a red light. Upon this observation, Officer Wilmoth conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The two occupants of the vehicle were identified as Sheldon B. Gray, 47; and Shannon D. Bingham, 38, both of 2271 Coal Tipple Hollow Road, Lebanon, VA. Both parties were questioned about the incident and gave statements about assaulting each other.

Gray was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, several small baggies of pills identified as Schedule II substances, and several plastic bags of a white crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine.

A search of the vehicle yielded several empty plastic baggies, and a plastic tube with a white residue consistent with methamphetamine.

Gray and Bingham were placed under arrest and transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail. Gray and Bingham were both charged with Assault and Battery against a family or household member, in violation of § 18.2-57.2 of the Code of Virginia. Both subjects were held on a $1000 secured bond.


All drugs seized will be sent to the lab for testing. Additional charges are pending.
