Abingdon Police Department

For Immediate Release

On Monday, January 15, 2018, at approximately 11:27 AM, Abingdon Police were dispatched to 396 Towne Centre Drive in reference to a possible intoxicated male inside the store in the company of a young juvenile. Upon arrival, officers observed the person checking out at one of the registers. As officers made contact with the man, he was very lethargic and unsteady on his feet. He was identified as Christopher Brian Harris, 42, of 18301 Amish Drive, Abingdon, VA. To confirm their suspicions, officers administered a PBT (Preliminary Breath Test) on Harris, in which the results were a 0.400 BAC.

Officers placed Harris under arrest for public intoxication and transported him to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.

Another officer remained with the child in an attempt to determine the relationship of the child to Harris. The mother reported to the scene to take custody of the juvenile and clarified that Harris and the child were cousins. After reviewing surveillance video, it was determined that Harris drove to the store with the juvenile as his passenger.

He was charged with Public Intoxication, in violation of § 18.2-388 of the Code of Virginia; and Reckless Endangerment of a Child, in violation of § 18.2-371.1 of the Code of Virginia. Harris is being held without bond.
