FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- Abingdon High School Threat

Abingdon Police Department

For Immediate Release

On Friday, March 2, 2018, the Abingdon Police Department conducted an investigation of a possible threat to Abingdon High School.  The source of the possible threat was identified and found to be a juvenile.  An investigation was conducted and it was determined that the threat was unsubstantiated.

On Sunday, March 4, 2018, more claims and social media posts started to circulate regarding the reported threat on Friday. The Abingdon Police Department re-investigated the matter, conducted more interviews, and found the threat to still be not credible.

At this time, the Abingdon Police Department has concluded that there is no threat to students or faculty at Abingdon High School. The Abingdon Police Department and the Washington County, VA School system have been working together on this matter. As a precaution, there will be extra officers at the school on Monday, March 5, 2018 for reassurance.

We would like to thank everyone that brought this incident to our attention. With the swift action of the public, this incident was resolved in a timely manner.

*Update*- As of 7:00PM tonight, APD officers spoke with the author of the snapchat post (see below). The person posted this as a way to warn other people, although, the person did not verify the information. We encourage everyone to contact police in the future with any rumors or information before posting on social media. When posting things of this nature on social media, you will only create panic without knowing facts.
