Traffic Alert For Nairn Funeral

Abingdon Police Department

For Immediate Release

The funeral service for Kirk E. Nairn will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Highlands Fellowship Church, 22417 Watauga Rd., Abingdon, VA. Following the funeral, a committal service will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, located at 19415 Lee Highway. It is anticipated that there will be a very large funeral procession from the church to the cemetery.  Because of this, the Abingdon Police Department, Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police will be controlling all signalized intersections from the location of the church on Rte. 75 (Cummings Street) to the cemetery on Lee Highway (West Main Street).

While the start of the procession is dependent upon the conclusion of the funeral service, it will occur sometime between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Traffic will be stopped out of respect for the family, and the memory of Kirk, to allow the procession to proceed unhindered to the cemetery.  Motorists are advised to avoid Cumming Street and West Main Street during this time.  In addition, drivers should be prepared to obey the officers who will be controlling the intersections.

To help eliminate congestion on Cummings Street, the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation will be closing the exit ramps at exit 17, both north and southbound, to prevent stopped traffic on the ramps from backing up on to the interstate.  Message boards will alert motorists that the exit is closed for the duration of the procession, and motorists will be advised to use exit 14 or exit 19.

We thank you for your understanding and patience, and ask that you extend the utmost courtesy to the Nairn family during the procession.
